Which Appliances Consume the Most Electricity at Home?

The oven is the electrical appliance that hurts your electricity bill the most.

On average, it's 1000 kWh consumed over the year, that is to say about 180€.

Fortunately, modern ovens allow you to consume much less.

This is particularly the case for ovens with the "convection" option or better, so-called combined ovens (oven + microwave).

To save money with your oven, not 36 solutions.

Stop opening the door all the time during cooking!

2. The water heater and radiators

Which Appliances Consume the Most Electricity at Home?

Did you know that almost half of the French population heats with an electric heater?

If you fall into this category, well know that your radiators consume an average of 1000 kWh per year.

That's another 180€ of expenses.

Of course, this amount varies according to your habits, living space and insulation.

As for the consumption of your water heater, it's about 800 kWh (152€) per year.

It's expensive, I know; therefore respect these 2 recommendations to lighten the bill:

- Take showers instead of baths! Plus, it saves water.

- Insulate your home as well as possible and configure your heating properly with a thermostat.

Lowering the temperature of the heating by a few degrees before sleeping is one of the good habits to have.

Finally, I can't help telling you about my hot water bottle.

It's inexpensive, warms my bed well, and saves me a lot of money.

3. The hob

Which Appliances Consume the Most Electricity at Home?

Be aware that a hob costs you between 90 and 180€ per year.

Its consumption actually varies between 500 and 1000 kWh.

The most recent and most qualitative models can nevertheless divide this consumption by 3!

There are also a few good habits to follow when using this device.

Already, put pans that have the same diameter as the plate . This prevents heat loss.

Then, turn off the hob a minute before the end of your cooking.

Last but not least, cover your pots when boiling water!

By doing this, the calculation is quickly done. It's 4 times less electricity used!

4. Air conditioning

Which Appliances Consume the Most Electricity at Home?

Air conditioning provides undeniable comfort, especially in summer.

On the other hand, this type of device consumes a lot of electricity.

It is between 500 and 1000 kWh per year (90 to 180€).

If you have one, don't forget a few basic principles that will save you money.

In very hot weather, close your windows, shutters and curtains.

In the evening, create a draft to bring in the fresh air.

And then know that air conditioning, we can do without it! Yes, yes, I assure you. Look at this.

5. The dryer

Which Appliances Consume the Most Electricity at Home?

On average, a tumble dryer uses 350 kWh of electricity per year, a cost of around €65.

Fortunately, this consumption can be divided by 3 with appliances rated A+++.

If you plan to buy this type of device, prefer condensing units with a humidity probe.

This option allows the dryer to stop automatically when it detects that the laundry is dry.

Thus, your laundry wears out less and your bill is lighter!

2 other solutions also come to mind.

Spin the laundry well before removing it from the washing machine.

And dry it outside (if that's not possible, use this trick).

6. The refrigerator

Which Appliances Consume the Most Electricity at Home?

The oldest models of refrigerators consume between 250 and 500 kWh of electricity per year.

Standard and recent models are much more economical. Instead, count between 125 and 250 kWh (24 to 45€).

On the other hand, if you have an American fridge, expect to consume twice as much!

Count an average of 640 kWh per year, i.e. €121.

2 tips to lighten your bills.

Clean the rear grill regularly out of the fridge and do not place your appliance in direct sunlight or near a heat source.

7. The independent freezer

Which Appliances Consume the Most Electricity at Home?

The independent freezer is a device more and more present among the French.

It's true that it allows you to have a lot more space than a simple freezer combined with the fridge.

Its consumption is nevertheless quite high since it is around 340 kWh per year on average.

The best models can however cost less since some only consume 140 kWh (26€/year).

As with a fridge, place it in a place away from heat sources.

8. The dishwasher

Which Appliances Consume the Most Electricity at Home?

A very practical device for washing your plates, the dishwasher consumes an average of 250 kWh per year.

It is therefore a cost of 48 € that comes out of your pocket if you are equipped with this machine.

Nevertheless, I remind you that the dishwasher uses less water than washing by hand.

And that is not negligible.

Finally, to reduce its cost of use a little, do not run it half empty and use the eco mode.

Just to save money, don't forget that you can also make your own washing tablets.

9. Computer, television and internet box

Which Appliances Consume the Most Electricity at Home?

So these everyday devices are in absolute terms not very energy-intensive, except that they remain plugged in all the time.

It is therefore necessary to count for each of them a consumption ranging between 130 to 200 kWh per year (25 to 38€).

Know that it is the television and the internet box that cost you the most.

Around 150 kWh or €30 per year.

Of course, these amounts are proportional to your uses and the type of TV model.

As I watch a lot of series, I'm almost certain that I consume more than €30 a year!

Fortunately, my LED screen consumes 2 to 3 times less than other technologies.

The computer has a consumption of just under 100 kWh per year (20€).

Again, this may differ depending on its use.

In absolute terms, the best way to save money on these devices is not complicated.

Unplug them instead of leaving them on standby.

Mind you, devices left on standby cost approximately €80 a year.

This is equivalent to leaving the equivalent of 7 light bulbs on 24/24 all year round!

10. Phone chargers

Which Appliances Consume the Most Electricity at Home?

Come on, let's be honest.

We all let our charger plug in even after it has finished charging the phone.

We tell ourselves that it doesn't really have an impact.

Well, let me tell you, it's quite the opposite.

Your charger continues to consume electricity even when the battery is full.

Worse; even when left plugged in without being connected, the charger consumes electricity!

So in the end it doesn't cost much (a few euros a year).

But if you multiply that by millions of French people, hello environmental impact.

11. Other everyday devices

Other appliances that we use on a daily basis weigh on our overall electricity bill.

Here, let's take the case of the halogen lamp. It is all the same 200 kWh per year or 38€ of expenditure.

And then, we have everything related to coffee makers, microwaves, game consoles...

Count an average consumption of 70 to 130 kWh for these types of appliances.

We can continue the list with toasters, vacuum cleaners, lamps, clock radios...

There, your average consumption ranges from 20 to 70 kWh.

Finally, I finish with the printers, fan, electric shavers...

Taken individually, their consumption is not excessive. This is less than 20 kWh on average.

But put end to end, it begins to encrypt!

The devices we use the least cost us the most

Which Appliances Consume the Most Electricity at Home?

The ranking of electrical appliances that consume the most is inversely proportional to their frequency of use.

In other words, it's the devices we use the least that cost us the most.

Let me explain.

Take your internet box; it is plugged in all year round, but in the end it consumes very little.

On average, its consumption is estimated at 200 kWh (38€) per year.

While the iron, which is used much less often, consumes 260 kWh per year (50€).

You see; objects that are constantly plugged in are not necessarily the ones that cost the most electricity.
