11 DIY tips for the car

For many, the car is an indispensable means of transport that will only continue to work properly through good maintenance. Now you can drive to the garage for every little thing, but with these 11 DIY tips for the car you make things just that little bit easier and, above all, cheaper.

1. Cheap floor mats

Are you looking for new or different floor mats? Instead of buying expensive car floor mats, you can rather go to the local store where they sell carpet. Remaining pieces of carpet are often easily and inexpensively available. Just cut it to size for your car and you not only have new, but also unique floor mats.

2. Remove rust from car battery

A particularly handy DIY tip for the car:mix a cup of baking soda with a cup of water and brush the terminals of the car battery with it. Leave it on for an hour and then rinse. Another option:throw a can of carbonated water over it.

3. Cleaning the undercarriage from mud and snow

Good maintenance not only has to do with the interior, but also the exterior needs to be well maintained. This certainly applies to the undercarriage of the car. Because of mud or snow, the chassis can endure a lot. Time to do something about this. Just put the garden sprinkler under the car and let it do its job for half an hour.

4. Repairing minor paint damage

If there is a superficial scratch in the lacquer layer, you can easily and quickly repair it with transparent nail polish. The nail polish ensures that the lacquer layer is further protected, is widely available and also very affordable.

5. Cleaning car door water drainage holes

It is very important to clean the water drainage holes of the car door every now and then. Leaves and dirt can clog the holes, causing moisture to build up. This moisture can eventually cause rust to form and therefore your car decreases in value. To make cleaning easier, you can use an iron clothes hanger.

This is also a point that you have to take into account if you want to buy a used car. Always take a look at the inside, because rust reduces the value of a car.

6. Repair scratches

If there is a deeper scratch, which also damages the color, this DIY car repair tip can help you. Look for a matching color of crayon and go over the scratch with it. In any case, the scratches are no longer visible and the wax also protects your car.

7. De-icing windows and defrosting frozen car locks

Always carry a small bottle of windshield washer fluid with you to defrost your windows and defrost car locks. There are of course many other ways to deal with a frozen lock and special tips to prevent or solve winter car problems.

8. Emergency light and heat

There is nothing more annoying than being stranded somewhere without light and heat. Be prepared for this and always have an empty coffee pot, a candle and matches in your trunk. You can fill the coffee pot with hot water on the way or just before departure. This ensures that you are always well prepared on the road.

9. Maintain automatic antennas

To maintain automatic antennas, you can go over them with a piece of waxed paper from time to time. The wax ensures that there is no movement in the antennae.

10. Keep frost off the windows

By pouring some rubbing alcohol (rubbing alcohol) on the windows, you prevent frost from forming. Particularly convenient if, for example, frost is expected at night.

11. Prepared for breakdowns on the road

There is nothing more annoying than a breakdown on the road. If you now have a job that requires you to get under the car, it is useful to stay as clean as possible yourself. By transporting a piece of carpet in your trunk, you can easily lie under your car anywhere and at any time. Also useful for kneeling or squatting if you have to work on the side of the car (for example when changing a tire).
