Tips for designing a healthy bedroom

Nothing is more important to our body than a good night's sleep. A good night's sleep starts in the bedroom. With these tips for designing a healthy bedroom, your body can relax optimally.

Why is a good night's sleep important?

Many people do not realize it, but 1/3 of your daily energy needs are needed at night. Your body needs enough sleep to function optimally. Work is being done on recovery, processing impressions and much more. A bad night's sleep is therefore disastrous and has a major impact on the quality of life.

Tips for designing a healthy bedroom

A restful and healthy bedroom is important for a good night's sleep. A healthy bedroom mainly has to do with the use of the right colors, the furnishing, decoration and the purchase of a suitable mattress. Sometimes it can make a lot of difference if you choose a 160×210 mattress instead of a standard size. Just a little longer, so you have more sleeping comfort.

What is the best color for a bedroom?

In fact, everything starts with choosing the right color. Although the bedroom is an underrated room, it is where you spend about 1/3 of your life. It is therefore of great importance to devote time and attention to this.

Colors have a major influence on how you experience things. Do you really want to relax in the bedroom? Then choose soft or neutral shades. Light colors have the advantage that they make a small bedroom appear larger.

What is the best place for your bed?

A bedroom is where the bed is. Nothing more or less. Or is it? Most people prefer to place the headboard against the wall facing the door. Clamped between two walls or placed with the long side against the wall is of course also possible. Especially if it is a small bedroom, it may be necessary to position the bed differently than the standard.

Before you actually put the bed in the bedroom, it is useful to look at the desired position without the bed and mattress. Just lie on the floor and see which way is most comfortable for you.

Also take draft into account. Many people misjudge this, especially if the bed is placed in front of a window. This is because drafts can negatively affect the quality of your sleep. If your bed is placed exactly between the window and the door, it could just be that you get a draft. You may not notice this immediately, but if you suffer from a stiff neck when you get up, it could be due to a draft. Do you only have glass? In any case, do not put your bed in front of the window or make sure that all holes and cracks are well sealed, especially in winter.

The ideal temperature in the bedroom is between 16 and 18 degrees with a humidity of 60%.

Healthy design of the bedroom with natural materials

Not only the position of your bed determines whether you can enjoy a well-deserved night's sleep. This also applies to the choice of materials. Whether it concerns furniture or bedding, it is preferable to choose natural materials. You can think of real wood without further processing or, for example, the use of (bio) cotton and silk.

Choosing the right mattress

Do you want to enjoy a good night's sleep? Then the purchase of a good mattress is a must. A good mattress prevents back and neck complaints. Which mattress suits you is actually very personal. Below you will find a few tips to keep in mind when purchasing a mattress:

  • Align the choice for your mattress with your slatted base
  • With a double bed you can choose a mattress separately
  • Choose the right size
  • Test sleeping increases the chance of success in finding a suitable mattress
  • Mattresses vary in hardness, this is also very personal
  • Don't be persuaded to buy by nice talk, but try it out for yourself

Another small tip:people are getting taller and that means that beds and mattresses also have to get bigger. If you are 1.90 or taller, it is advisable to take a look, for example, at a 160×220 mattress. 160 cm is the most commonly used size for a double bed, while 220 cm is extra long.

Choosing suitable bedding

Not only the bed and accompanying mattress provide sufficient sleep. Choosing the right bedding is just as important. Are you constantly cold? Or do you sweat a lot? This also has an impact on your sleep. When it comes to bedding, the choice is huge. You can choose a woolen duvet or a synthetic duvet. Make sure that your choice is based on the size of your mattress. So do you have an extra long mattress? Then opt for extra long bedding.

Have you once made a choice for a certain duvet? Then it's time to look at a mattress cover and duvet cover. There is a huge choice in materials, designs and colours. Do you want a good night's sleep? Then preferably sleep on a cotton fitted sheet in combination with a cotton duvet cover. Instead of cotton, you can opt for other natural materials such as satin or bamboo.

Natural materials adapt to your body temperature, making them pleasant in both summer and winter.

A good pillow for a well-deserved night's sleep

Like a mattress, choosing a pillow is very personal. Where one swears by a memory foam pillow, another has none of this. The most important thing when choosing a pillow is that your head and neck receive optimal support. After all, you don't want to wake up the next day with a headache that stems from pain in your neck and shoulders from using the wrong pillow.

Are you looking for a new pillow? Then do your research first. It's really nice if you can test sleep on a pillow, just like with a mattress. Only after a night's sleep will you know whether the pillow meets your wishes and requirements.

Bedroom lighting

Light plays a huge role when it comes to our overall well-being. In the bedroom, the use of bright lighting or cold fluorescent lamps is actually out of the question. It is better to use low beam, such as spotlights or dimmable wall lighting.

Decoration of a healthy bedroom

Of course, decoration should not be missing in the bedroom. This creates more atmosphere and intimacy. Before you completely surrender to decorating, start with the choice of window coverings. Curtains in neutral and soft tones give the bedroom a romantic and warm look. Wooden blinds underline the use of natural materials in the bedroom.

Do you want to style the bedroom? Then don't forget to put a few air-purifying plants in the room. A few pillows on the bed, a separate living blanket and two nice lights on either side of your bed provide the finishing touch.
