Wall cabinet in the living room, industrial look and custom

You may have already seen our wall cupboard in the living room. Two years ago we had a custom wall cabinet made for the living room of our old house. Even before that wall cupboard was ready, we moved and the cupboard for our new house had to be remodeled. Fortunately, there was one wall in the new house that this cupboard still fits against, otherwise we would have had to come up with whole new plans for it. Waste of money of course.

The living room and kitchen have now been renovated and we have everything in the same style, so that this custom-made wall cabinet fits perfectly into the whole. So very happy with it and that's a good thing because it was an extremely expensive cabinet. I think the cool thing about it is that we designed it all ourselves and that you will certainly not find a second one!

Unique custom-made wall-closet or a standard industrial-closet

Now there is one place in the house where I would still like a new cupboard. A sturdy wall cabinet, industrial with steel and wood. That's what I prefer. And preferably an open model, so that we can partly use it as a room divider between the office and the chill area. Nice plants in it and some baskets and voilà, then we have another cool eyecather.

The only question is whether I will again be tempted to have a unique custom wall cabinet made or whether we will go for a 'standard' copy from the store. With a nice Besta cupboard you can also make a custom wall cupboard of course, but that is not quite the style I am looking for for this space. It must be a stand-alone wall cabinet that is a maximum of 120 wide and that it will also fit well with the radiator housing that we are going to make here when we have laid the new floor.

Looking for a wall cabinet that you can buy in a store or online

Do you have less budget to spend or do you just want certainty in what you get for your money? Then a wall cabinet from the store is your choice. You know exactly what you get for the money you want to spend. And there is plenty of choice. Whether you are looking for an industrial wall cabinet, a modern variant or just like retro; there are wall cabinets in all shapes and sizes.

Pay attention to the following tips when you are looking for a wall cabinet:

  • Would you like to have an eye-catcher in your living room, or are you looking for a cabinet that completely blends in with the rest of your living room?
  • In any case, measure the maximum dimensions for the cabinet. Everything that falls within is an option
  • Go offline in a number of stores or online on Pinterest for example (in the latter case you will probably see a lot more choices than in the few stores you visit)
  • If you have some idea of what you want, you can also scour the internet for the desired models and sizes. Enter clear and complete search terms for best results

How do you have a wall cabinet made to measure?

First of all, it is important that you already have an idea of the type of cabinet that you want to have made. Whether it's a wall cabinet or a sideboard, if you have it custom made, you still have to give input. Unless you commission it through an interior designer, they will do it for you. However, if you are going to talk directly with the supplier who will tailor your cabinet, as we have done, then the following is important:

  • It is useful if you already have an idea of the design
  • Make sure you know the exact measurements for the wall cabinet
  • Collect material on, for example, a Pinterest board that you can show to your furniture maker so that he can get an idea of the execution
  • You prefer to work with a furniture maker that you have seen some work from before. Maybe with family or friends? Working with a complete stranger is of course also possible, but especially if it involves a significant expense, it is nice to know what quality your furniture maker delivers.

What do you prefer? A custom wall cupboard or an existing cupboard? The above cabinet is in any case the cabinet that we commissioned made for our living room. I'm super happy with it. The only major drawback? It cannot be moved, it is that heavy!
