How to repaint your kitchen cabinets?

Why repaint your kitchen furniture?

The kitchen is an essential living room in homes. We spend a lot of time there as a family preparing meals and eating. It is a friendly place that must remain warm. But it is a room that is expensive to equip and when you buy a new house, you do not always have the means to completely redo the kitchen. It can also be a kitchen installed a long time ago, which we would like to modernize without spending too much.

The best solution to this problem is to repaint the kitchen cabinets. A new color, more trendy, will restore the shine to this central room in the house. You will feel better in it and it will match perfectly with the rest of your decoration.

Can we repaint all the furniture in the kitchen?

All kitchen furniture can be repainted regardless of its materials. Nowadays, DIY stores offer makeover solutions for all supports:wood, tiles, ceramics, everything is possible.

The furniture most often repainted in the kitchen are cupboard doors, worktops and credenzas. But you can also refresh the kitchen table, chairs, sideboards or sideboards.

The only appliances you can't paint are appliances like the oven or microwave. For refrigerators, giant stickers camouflage an unwanted tint.

Which paint to choose?

The kitchen is a room that is often undermined. The blows are frequent and the dirt constant. You therefore need a paint that is shock-resistant and easy to clean.

Resin paint is a good option for cabinet doors. It is thick enough not to leave marks after a blow and it is easy to maintain.

We recommend that you choose a special kitchen renovation paint. It will be the most suitable for your needs, will not require stripping the furniture or underlaying. You will save time and be sure of the result.

The steps to repaint your kitchen furniture

To successfully makeover your kitchen, you must follow a few simple but essential steps.

Preparing the kitchen

The first step is to prepare your kitchen cabinets for painting. It requires a bit of protection.

Disassemble the furniture

First of all, we recommend that you dismantle your kitchen furniture. If you decide to repaint the cabinet doors and drawers, carefully remove them and lay them on a board or drop sheet. Remember to empty drawers and cupboards and remove door handles and knobs.

Protect the kitchen

To avoid leaving traces of paint all over the place and spoiling your work, we advise you to protect your kitchen well. For this, equip yourself with tarpaulins or sheets to protect your floors. You should also put painter's tape on the corners of your furniture in contact with a surface that should not be painted or that will not have the same color of paint. This is especially the case for the credenza or the worktop.

Clean and repair furniture

Once the kitchen is prepared, it must be thoroughly cleaned according to the choice of your paint and the type of support you have.

Sand

To ensure that the paint adheres well to your furniture, roughen the surface with sandpaper. Use a thin paper so as not to cut into the support too much. If your furniture already had a color, keep it, so you won't have to add an undercoat. Under no circumstances should you get to the raw material, this would complicate the holding of the paint.

If you have opted for a special kitchen paint, do not necessarily sand your furniture, but simply scrape off the old paint if it is flaking.

Repair

Some kitchen furniture deteriorates with time and use. If you notice any knocks or cracks, fill them carefully with filler or wood putty. Once dry, sand lightly to even out the surface.

Wash

The most important preparation step is cleaning the furniture you want to repaint. Indeed, the kitchen quickly becomes sticky when preparing greasy dishes and dust easily sticks to the furniture.

It is absolutely necessary to thoroughly degrease all surfaces. For this, you can use a soda-based product. For natural cleaning, put a handful of baking soda in two liters of hot water then rub the furniture with a sponge. Finally, rinse with clean water and let dry.

Painting the furniture

Once these steps are completed, you can paint your furniture.

The choice of brush

Depending on the chosen paint and the surface, you need to use different tools to paint. For resin paint, use a paint roller. For other paints, always choose a roller with a fine pile to leave as few marks as possible.

You will also need a flat brush or spray gun for moldings and hard-to-reach corners.

The primary

If your paint is not specially made for the kitchen, we recommend that you apply an undercoat to your furniture, especially if it is made of raw material.

The primer will allow the first coat of paint to adhere better and your color will stand out immediately.

Layers of paint

For kitchen furniture, two coats of paint are absolutely necessary. Apply a first coat to all of your furniture to be repainted then wait the time indicated on the pot to do the second.

Apply yourself to obtain a result that meets your expectations.

Protect the furniture

Once the paint has been applied, do not hesitate to wait a few days before putting your furniture in contact with water. Special kitchen paint takes time to dry through.

Finally, once dry, do not forget to regularly pass a soft cloth over your furniture to remove dirt and dust. So you can keep a kitchen in good condition and modern for longer.
