A place to go

Those beautiful bosses we call cats are like the rest of us:when they need to go, they need a place to go. If you're a cat owner, you might think that litter boxes are just an unfortunate part of life.

I'm here to tell you that they don't have to be a negative part of your design plan. There are some very creative solutions that will make your guests feel more comfortable and make your cat feel like a VIP.

Layout Layout

Start with an inexpensive prefab cabinet. This project works best with a cabinet that has doors that open at the front, for easy cleaning and access to the waste tray. Look for a unit that can also double as a side table or bench. This particular cabinet has two sections. One will be where the kitty can do her work and the other section is where she can wipe her feet before heading back to the kitchen. Once you have chosen the piece of it, simply disassemble the side door. Now you are going to draw an opening. You'll want it to be large enough to accommodate your kitty, but not so large that you lose the sense of privacy and discretion of the room.

Cut the door

Cut your opening with an oscillating saw. You'll want to work slowly and wear safety glasses. To make this particular opening, I am measuring 10" tall and 8" wide.

Tape Off Edges

Heavy electrical or electrical tape should be used to finish off the edges of the opening. Not only will it look better, but it will also soften the edges of your tickets. Helpful Hint:Duct tape comes in a variety of colors. See if there's one that matches your piece or makes a good complementary color.

Two-room kitty box

The second chamber is the secret weapon for keeping kitty litter dust to a minimum. Cut out a rug from the dollar store and your kitty will walk on it when you go outside, dusting inside the cabinet and not on the floor. Hanging a few scoops and sweepers inside will make cleanup convenient.

The litter box will always have a place in any cat lover's home, but now that place is a pretty one. Keeping the litter box closed yet accessible is a friendly design compromise that will have you and your pet purring in no time. See more of this apartment makeover>>
