How to make a humidor drawer

Step 1

How to make a humidor drawer

Measure drawer space

Measure the size of the drawer inside the cabinet that will contain the humidor. Based on the measurements above, cut four matching sheets of MDF to function as the sides and back of the drawer. Position the table saw blade about half the width of the cut MDF sheets, and run the two MDF sheets over the saw to make a slot for the bottom panels to slide into.

Add veneer to MDF

Glue a piece of Spanish cedar veneer to the MDF pieces that will be the inside of the drawers. Use a handheld router to trim away any excess veneer. Run a bead of glue along the sides of the MDF sheets and glue them to the back sheet to create the drawer frame.

Make cigar racks

To make the shelves for the cigars to sit on, first cut as many MDF slats as will fit inside the drawer and set them aside. Make a 90 degree template out of scrap wood to hold your work in place. Cut two” spacers (twice the amount of slats previously cut) from scrap MDF. Align the first slat with the top of the template and place two” spacer a few inches down from the top of the slat and another a few inches from the bottom of the slat. Lay another batten next to the first one, and then lay down two more spacers. Repeat the process with seven more strips..

Stage 4

Attach Shelves

Put some glue on a couple of slats that have the spacers between them and then put a horizontal slat on top. Use a nailer to further secure. Repeat step to attach bottom horizontal batten to complete frame. Place at the bottom of the drawer.

Attach a piano hinge to the top of the drawer and attach the last sheet of MDF to the hinge.
