Determine the size of the tablecloth

Placemats are typically between 12" x 18" and 14" x 20". Make sure yours fits the table at least two inches from the edge of the table runner. You may want to make an extra tablecloth or two in case you need a replacement in the future. Add four inches to the width and four inches to the length (two inches on each side). This is the full size fabric you will need for each tablecloth.

Cloak and iron

Lay a yard of upholstery fabric on the opposite side of your work surface and then lay the fusible web on top of that. Lay the contrast lining, with the pretty side on top of that. Insert a few pins to keep the fabric layers in place. Start ironing in the center of the fabric and work your way out so there are no bulges. If necessary, use a piece of non-stick ironing sheet to protect your fabric. Repeat the process for all of your placemats.

Double hem

Fold the edge of the fabric in 1/2” on all long ends and iron flat. Fold one more time, another 1/2” and iron. Cut a strip of fusible tape to size and place between the double hem layers and steam iron. Run the iron back and forth a few times and make sure it's stuck. Repeat the hem on the shorter sides.

Double sided

To make sure the corners lay flat, add an extra drop or two of fabric glue under the hem.

Determine the size of the table runner

Runners look best when they are 1/3 the width of the board, so for the final width of the runner, divide the width of the board by three. Add two feet to the length of your table for the length of the runner. Add four inches to the width and length (two inches on each side) for the hem allowance. That is the total size of fabric you will need.

Hem Length

Cut the table runner fabric to size. Make a 1/2” double seam around all four sides (just like you did for the locations). Tuck the fusible tape under the second hem to hold it in place.

Seam width

To make sure the corners lay flat, add an extra drop or two of fabric glue under the hem.

Set a fancy table

Don't spend huge amounts of money on table linens, make your own and use the extra money on a nice meal. Not only were these double sided placemats and table runner inexpensive but they were also super easy.
