How to Make a Puffy Paint Valentine Card

I still remember the appeal of playing with puffy paint as a young craftsman. It was a novelty product in our house reserved for special parties and play dates. Finding out that I could make my own puffy paint was just as important because such a simple and inexpensive recipe creates an amazing volume of paint. This homemade recipe for puffy paint tubes pops out of a plastic bag so smoothly you'll feel like you're frosting a cake. It's fun for everyday work, but we put together a batch of handmade cards for Valentine's Day.

Add a 1/2 cup of white school glue. Mix it gently by folding the layers with a spatula. Your paint may not be as fluffy if you mix too much because it will have sudsed up a bit of the shaving cream.

Add color

Separate the mixture into several bowls, one for each color. We left a bowl empty of food coloring and used different amounts of red gel food coloring to create various shades of pink.

Place the mixture in the bag

Turn a plastic bag upside down and scoop out the puffy paint. Invert the bag and seal it well, removing any air pockets. Cut a small hole in the corner of the bag for the piping.

Help children squeeze patterns and letters onto construction paper. Put the cards aside to heal smoothly. The paint will remain raised and soft to the touch as it dries. Once the paper is stiff under the cured foam paint, cut out the shapes with scissors.
