Paper carnations, two shapes

We made these flowers in two ways:the first with cupcake liners (coffee filters could also be used) and the second set of flowers with white cardstock.

Step 1

First fold

Spray paint all the white branches and set them aside to dry. Fold the lining in half. (In this example, we used cupcake liners, but you can also use coffee filters.)

Second fold

Fold one more time.

Turn

Rotate the bottom of the liner to see how the top begins to resemble half a carnation.

Add more petals

To make the flower thicker with more petals, take the same size cupcake liner and put some glue in the middle, then place the finished "middle" on it and grab both liners by the base and twist.

Make it thick

Continue adding liners until you reach the fullness you like best. When you get to that point, set the flower aside to dry.

Cardboard Flowers

Cut the cardboard into circles of various sizes. Then cut the circles into spirals.

Shape the swirls

When you get to the end, loosen the paper a bit so the flower isn't taut and add a few more drops of glue to the end of the spiral, again holding it to the side. Set the flowers aside to dry.

Time to organize

When all the flowers and branches are dry, start assembling your centerpiece. You may want to place the branches in your vase before placing the flowers to ensure the placement of the flower is exactly where you want it.

Step 9

Attach

When your branches are arranged, use a hot glue gun to attach flowers to the branch. It's best if an adult handles the hot glue gun, but little ones will have fun choosing where the flowers will go. To prevent hot glue from dripping off the flowers, place the hot glue on the bottom of the flower and hold it upside down for a minute so the glue starts to get sticky.

Organize

Continue placing the paper flowers on the branches until you achieve the desired look. Add glitter or dip the ends of the flowers in paint for a little something extra.
