Retrofit Patio Chairs

When we found these old chairs, they were rusty, worn, and ready for the dumpster. We brought them back to life by cleaning off the rust, sanding them lightly, then applying primer and paint. Take a look at how easy it was.

Prepare the furniture

Put the items in the carton or drop cloth. Inspect the parts. If there is cracked and peeling paint, use a wire brush before sanding.

Remove rust

Use a stiff wire brush to vigorously brush away rusted and peeling areas. If there is concern that lead-based paint was used, wear a mask or respirator.

Sand

After removing the peeling paint and rusting it with a wire brush, use an emery block or sandpaper to smooth any remaining rough spots. Be careful not to scratch bare metal.
