Art Poster Chest

Cathie Filian and Steve Piacenza have some easy ideas for dressing up old furniture. Here, they use French posters to add serious flair to a boring powder room.

Materials and tools:

Chest of drawers with flat face drawer fronts.
A French advertisement or movie poster.
criterion
pencil
rotary cutter
self healing mat
sewing or paper weights
sticky spray
Medium or clear decoupage spray sealer
roller

Steps:

1. Remove the drawer pulls.

2. Hold the poster up to the dresser; determine and measure where the top of the poster will fall in the top drawer. Measure the height of each drawer and the distance between each.

3. Measure and draw lines to divide the poster into sections corresponding to each drawer and each dividing space between each.

4. Put the poster on the self-healing mat. Align the dowel on each cut line and weigh the dowel and poster with sewing weights. Use the criteria as a guide to cut each line with the rotary cutter.

5. Keeping the poster strips in the correct order, apply each piece to the corresponding drawer or spacer piece by spraying each strip with adhesive and placing it in the center of the dresser section.

6. Use the tray to flatten the poster to make sure it adheres well. Let the adhered strips dry..

7. Use a sanding sponge to lightly sand the edges of the dresser sections for a distressed effect.

8. Apply medium or clear decoupage spray sealer to each section of the dresser to protect it.
