Saving water-damaged photos and documents

Step 1

Hang a clothesline

Use a rope or sturdy rope to make a clothesline inside your home. You may want to put it in the kitchen because you will be using the freezer. Do not hang line outside - wind and weather can further damage items.

Step 2

Put papers/photos in the freezer bag

Put wet papers and photos in a freezer bag as quickly as possible. If there are multiple pages stuck together, do not try to separate them. Keep the stack of papers as is. Put the bag in the freezer and keep it there for about an hour.

Step 3

Saving water-damaged photos and documents

Remove freezer papers and hang up

Leave the frozen bag on the counter. If you have a stack of papers that were stuck together, separate each page carefully. Use tweezers to air dry each page or photo.
