Caster wheels fall into two categories:furniture store wheels and equipment.
- Plastic furniture casters have two wheels and roll well on carpet. They are light duty wheels and cannot carry much weight. They are long lasting tools.
- Hard rubber wheels swivel in all directions for increased mobility. They are more durable than plastic wheels. They are plate mounted with screws that go directly into the board.
- Use casters with stems for furniture with legs. They are mounted with sleeves that are inserted into the legs of the furniture.
- When you don't want the wheels to appear, attach a skirt to the plywood base that the wheels mount to.
- Most shop equipment wheels are plate mounted. Inexpensive, lightweight, non-swivel plastic casters are difficult to maneuver around corners. They do not roll on electrical cables. It's possible to buy shop swivel casters, but that kind still doesn't roll over electrical cords.
- Sturdy steel wheels can carry a big load, despite the small size. When they are loaded, it is difficult to overcome obstacles such as power cables.
- Durable, hard rubber wheels have toothed locks to keep the wheels from moving when you want them to remain stationary. These wheels have no problem passing electrical wires when loaded.
- Use big wheels if you have to drive over wires. Four swivel casters provide the greatest maneuverability. If you have two caster wheels and two fixed wheels, you will still have trouble moving the wheels in some directions. Use casters with locking casters to prevent unit from rolling.
